What have I read recently?

The Chase by Candace Fox
There is a prison in the Nevada Desert, housing over 600 offenders, including death row prisoners. This book hits the ground running, with all the prisoners being let loose at once (not by choice), resulting in "the chase" to find them all by authorities.
Really strong female characters lead this story and some intriguing plot twists.
Good page-turner. Also, Candice Fox is an award-winning Australian author of numerous books.
The Long, Long Afternoon by Inga Jesper
I read this one earlier in the year in two days.
Completely hooked, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
The setting is 1950s California, so there is sexism, drug abuse, racism, and many other battles present.
Joyce, a housewife, goes shopping. She comes home and vanishes.
There is blood in the kitchen and her young children are alone in the house. They are found by Ruby, their African-American housemaid, for which she is arrested immediately.
This showcases the alienated life of women suffering in silence but presenting perfection to the world.
It is a glimpse into the reality of how black people are treated by white people.
There is jealousy, abuse, sadness and loss, predominantly ending with women as the victims.
So many themes of importance in this book that should be read. Definitely recommended.
