Student Book Reviews

Unmasked - Turia Pitt (Year 7)

This was such an awesome read. What I loved about this book was reading about Turia’s story and how she managed to live every day to the fullest and recover from her severe injuries. I believe she is a great model and this book really emphasises the true will-power of strength one can have

Gathering Blue - Lois Lowry (Year 8)

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry is a captivating sequel to The Giver. You enter yet another society different to our own. I also found it interesting the main character quite interesting, as she is flawed and just hearing what that is like in a community such as this. Though I am not pleased that you almost hear no mention of what happened in the 1st book. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.

19 Love Songs - David Levithan (Year 9)

I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t my favourite.
I had mixed emotions about the jumps each chapter into another person’s story as some felt very unfinished yet others felt like it was the perfect spot to finish the story.
The book is a great wake up call to everyone, as it displays many different types of relationships people can be in.
It was especially nice to know that these stories were about teens and that they all had a different story to tell.

Animal Farm - George Orwell (Year 10)

Animal Farm was an enjoyable and entertaining book. While reading it and studying it at school, I learnt a lot about communist societies and social hierarchy. I thought it was interesting how Orwell could convey such a complex message, through writing a story about talking animals on a farm. It was very clever and well written!

What I'm reading - Mel Hayes

undefined

I loved this haunting tale set in the wilds of East Scotland. Told across three different timelines, this is a story of three women’s struggles with violence and abuse. The Rock of the title looms over the women’s lives, adding to the sometimes bleak nature of the tale. Although the themes are dark and often spooky, the women are all strong, engaging characters. Evie Wyld does a great job of building tension as she flips between the timelines – I couldn’t put this book down!

2005 Book Week

Book Week is an annual event celebrated by libraries all over Australia to encourage reading and every year has a theme. In 2005, the theme was Reading Rocks, so for a week or two our library adopted a rock and roll vibe.  The husband of Jan Murphy, our library technician at the time, made the Reading Rocks sign that acted as an archway over the book cases.
