The Cheat Sheet by
Bree and Nathan have been best friends since high school. Now they are adults, her a dance instructor, him, a professional football player.
Small issue is they have both been in love with each other since high school and never admitted it. One night when out, Bree accidentally reveals her true feelings about Nathan to a reporter and the story goes viral, but she denies it! But Nathan's manager offers them a lucrative deal to fake their relationship for a month.
The Family Doctor by
Paula, Stacey and Anita have been friends since high school. Stacey and her two young children move into Paula's house, fleeing violent domestic abuse from the husband.
Paula, a doctor, comes home one night to find Stacey and the children have been killed and then the husband, still in the house, kills himself in front of her.
This sets of a chain of events with Paula and Anita, which leads to an unexpected closure.
It is realistically paced and the emotional torment and degradation of Paula's mind feels genuine.
It is a story of domestic violence by men and the power they hold over others. There is also the reality of what happens when the law does not protect victims. It is a sad, fearful story which tells many truths of reality.
Only a Monster by
This was a surprise! A good surprise.
A supernatural, historical, beautiful story about Joan finding out she is half a monster. Her family failed to tell her and educate her.
A violent tragedy occurs and Joan needs to align with Aaron, an enemy, to find out what she needs to do and where she needs to go to save her family.
This is dark, tragic, and beautiful, with elements of hope and morals regarding the decisions we make and the consequences.
House of Hollows by
Three sisters in Edinburgh go missing and are found one month later in the same spot, naked, and malnourished, with no memory of what happened to them. All of them have small scars on their throats, Their hair turns white and their eyes black. They have a magical, unbreakable bond, a threat that binds them.
Their father eventually believes they are not his children that have returned.
Cut to ten years later, Grey Hollow is a worldwide successful clothing designer. Vivi is a tattooed, pierced, roaming musician in a band, and Iris is 17 and still at school and only one living with their mother.
Then Grey goes missing again, believed to have been taken by a man with a horned bill mask. Vivii and Iris join together to find Grey and realise everything stems back to the month they went missing as children.
They come to learn the truth of what happened to them years before.
This is ethereal, magical, beautiful, sinister, dark, creepy, deceitful and so many more things, all at the same time.
It is not a predictable book. It is engaging, the dark web of mystery and lies and beauty that the author wove together beautifully. One of my favourites.
Anatomy: a love story. by
Hazel is a young lady in Edinburgh, 1817. She knows what she wants and that is to be a surgeon. Regardless of society's rules, only men can study and practice medicine. Hazel meets Jack, a body snatcher, living in poverty, surviving by taking dead bodies to the anatomy school to get paid.
After a series of events which includes Hazel making a deal with the head surgeon to pass the medical exam, Hazel and Jack end up working together to dig up bodies for her studies.
There are other sinister ploys happening within the medical field, plus a love story.
Themes: historical Scotland, murder, death, sexism, inequality of genders, lies, deceit, family, ignorance, poverty, eliteness, pride, and determination.
