ABC podcast

If you’re interested in creative writing you’ve likely heard of the Heroic Journey – the markers which drive story and can be found in pretty much every successful legend and tale – from The Odyssey to Doctor Who, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

Paul McIntyre recently spoke to Rosie Dub, one of Tasmania’s most accomplished novelist, and began by asking her when she first developed her fascination with story.

Gathering your writing ideas

Use a lined notebook, a blank google doc or a pinterest folder. There are lots of ways to gather your ideas for writing so that when you sit down to write you are ready with some ideas.

  • Notebook divided into characters and events or even chapters. Transcribe ideas into this space, use dot points, diagrams or photos to spark your interest.
  • Music list with songs that get you into the mood for writing about your topic.
  • Pinterest board, showing you what your characters look like or the world in which they exist.
  • Google Drive Folder, to write down ideas or save images that inspire you.
  • Create a front cover for your book; what would it look like and how would the blurb read?
  • Shoe box; a space to put post it notes or napkins with scribbles. When the shoe box is full, empty it out and see what ideas connect with each other.
  • What type of instagram would your character have? What pictures would they take? Curate top 10 photos that your character might take and document.
  • What would the newspaper headlines look like in your world and in your story? A great technique to start a chapter, talking about the news in the world that you are building.
