Issues in Society

Multiculturalism and Australian Identity

Contemporary Australian society is a patchwork of cultural and ethnic diversity. Australians are largely embracing of multiculturalism and welcoming of those born overseas, however being 'Australian' can describe a broad range of characteristics, behaviours and attitudes. National identity and pride in being Australian regularly influence public debate in Australia, but they are not always clearly defined. How do Australians living in a multicultural society identify with their national identity, and how do they view themselves as citizens? This book examines Australia's cultural diversity and the issue of social cohesion in light of its longstanding policy of multiculturalism. It also discusses a range of symbols and attitudes which define what it means to be Australian. Are multiculturalism and nationalism necessarily at odds?

Defending Australia

Australia is in the process of updating and strengthening its defence capabilities against a potential major aggressor. The latest government white paper has outlined a massive increase in military spending and confirmed the direction of Australias defence policy and strategy. This book examines the operational priorities and capabilities of the Australian army, navy and airforce as well as exploring the nations planned strategic direction. Topics also include Australias defence history, current war operations and peacekeeping contributions around the globe, the inclusion of more women in the Australian Defence Force, and the plight of returned veterans. A key focus of the book is the nations increased defence budget and upgrading of capabilities such as new submarines, frigates and fighter aircraft, at a time when Australia must adapt to a complex strategic and diplomatic environment which is dominated by long-term major ally the United States and the emerging military might of China in the Asia-Pacific region. When should Australians take up arms, and what are the costs and consequences of war? Are Australias strategic defence policies, capabilities and alliances enough to protect us from attack?

Activism and Protest

n a free society such as Australia, the right to peaceful protest is a long-practised feature of our democracy. The nightly news frequently broadcasts images of activists rallying for social change on diverse issues ranging from animal rights to coal mines, gay marriage, religious freedom and alt-right anti-immigration views. Social change movements are increasingly championed online through social media and e-petitions as well as on the streets, placing pressure on politicians and raising the public profile of a range of causes. Anti-protest laws, expanded police powers, and political disapproval towards electoral activism, chaotic vegan protests and mass climate change action by school students, have all directed a spotlight on the principles of protest and the role of activist groups in organising resistance and raising awareness of controversial causes. This brand new topic examines protest movements, rights and protections, and explores how activism can influence public opinion and hold governments and business accountable. Is the current climate of protest growing hotter for social change? Is Australia witnessing a rising tide of activism which is shifting power to the people?

Volunteering

It is estimated that around 3 in 10 Australians aged 15 and over have participated in voluntary work, contributing around 750 million hours and the equivalent of at least $17 billion worth of work each year in not-for-profit organisations. Volunteers provide substantial benefit to their communities and society more broadly. At the same time, volunteering also broadens the networks and professional skills of the volunteers themselves. Volunteering contributes to the economic and health status of the nation and to volunteers by providing a personal sense of satisfaction and wellbeing. What is the state of volunteering Australia? Who are Australia's volunteers and what activities are they involved in? And why don't more people volunteer? This book explores the benefits of volunteerism, and provides advice aimed at young people on how to get involved in volunteering in Australia and abroad. Volunteering goes beyond simple acts of kindness; it is the thread that binds communities and makes them strong.

Democracy in Australia

In a disrupted time of pandemic and recession, Australia has never been more reliant on clear leadership from its elected representatives, while also requiring greater co-operation among its citizens. Striking a balance between accountability and robust governance is a challenge during an era of reduced trust in political leaders by voters, especially among young people. The key principles of Australia's democratic society include individual freedoms, justice, tolerance of opposing ideas and representative government. Do these principles still hold true when research points to a growing disconnect between politicians and the people they represent? This book examines Australians' levels of trust in their elected leaders, looking at how our political system functions between the various levels and roles of government, as well as exploring opportunities for democratic reform. How can Australia better function as a modern democratic nation state in the twenty-first century?
